{"id":59,"date":"2011-07-07T02:21:19","date_gmt":"2011-07-07T02:21:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/firststepsontheway.com\/?page_id=59"},"modified":"2011-07-10T01:17:05","modified_gmt":"2011-07-10T01:17:05","slug":"08-introduction-to-baptisms","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/firststepsontheway.com\/?page_id=59","title":{"rendered":"Step 08 Introduction to Baptisms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>08 Introduction to Baptisms<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Introduction to<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Instruction about Baptisms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Third of Six<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;Elementary Teachings about Christ&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">from Hebrews 6:1,2<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We are studying Hebrews 6:1-2:<\/p>\n<p>1\u00a0 <strong><em>Therefore let us leave <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the elementary teachings about Christ<\/span> and go on to maturity, not laying again<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the foundation <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of repentance from acts that lead to death, and <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of faith in God,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>2<strong><em> <sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">instruction<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em> about <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptisms<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>, <\/em><\/strong><\/span><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the laying on of hands, <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the resurrection of the dead, and <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 eternal judgment.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the verse two above did you notice that the word \u201c<strong><em>baptisms<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u201d<\/em><\/strong> is plural!\u00a0 Is there more than one kind of baptism in the New Testament?<\/p>\n<p>Consider the following verse:<\/p>\n<p>[John the Baptist said:]\u00a0 <strong><em>&#8220;I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptize you with water<\/span> for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptize<\/span> you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">with the Holy Spirit<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">with fire<\/span>.\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(Matthew 3:11)<\/p>\n<p>John seems to be talking about at three kinds of baptism.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, John is making a distinction between the baptism that he is administering and the baptism that Jesus would administer.\u00a0 However, someone may object that in this verse baptism with the Holy Spirit and baptism with fire are the same thing.\u00a0\u00a0 The Greek wording can be understood that way.\u00a0 Even if it does mean that in this passage, other passages of the New Testament teach that there are at least three\u00a0ways to use the concept of \u2018baptism.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Consider these verses:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>On one occasion, while He <\/em><\/strong>[Jesus] <strong><em>was eating with them <\/em><\/strong>[His apostles]<strong><em>, He gave them this command: \u201cDo not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard Me speak about. <sup>5<\/sup> For John <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptized with water<\/span>, but in a few days you will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptized with the Holy Spirit<\/span>.\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(Acts 1:4,5)<\/p>\n<p>Again, we see two distinct baptizings, a baptizing with water and a baptizing with the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a third kind of baptizing:<\/p>\n<p>38 <strong><em>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what you are asking,\u201d Jesus said. \u201cCan you drink <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the cup<\/span> I drink or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">be baptized<\/span> with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptism<\/span> I am baptized with?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>39 <strong><em>\u201cWe can,\u201d they <\/em><\/strong>[James and John] <strong><em>answered.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jesus said to them, \u201cYou will drink <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the cup<\/span> I drink and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">be baptized<\/span> with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptism<\/span> I am baptized with, . . .\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here is a cup or baptizing that is different from the other two.\u00a0 This author sees it as the same as the baptizing with fire that John the Baptist mentioned.\u00a0 Later I\u2019ll share why.\u00a0 If you see no connection, it\u2019s OK.\u00a0 No matter what, Christians would do well to learn about this cup or baptizing also.<\/p>\n<p>So, the following three teachings will be about:<\/p>\n<p>1) Baptism with water<\/p>\n<p>2) Baptism with the Holy Spirit<\/p>\n<p>3) Baptism with fire<\/p>\n<p>(Please note:\u00a0 Although these three baptisms share a similar title, they are categorically different from each other.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 copyright 2011<\/p>\n<p>Lyra Publications<\/p>\n<p>Preston, Minnesota<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>08 Introduction to Baptisms Introduction to Instruction about Baptisms \u00a0 The Third of Six &#8220;Elementary Teachings about Christ&#8221; from Hebrews 6:1,2 \u00a0 We are studying Hebrews 6:1-2: 1\u00a0 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the foundation \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of repentance from acts that [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","template":"","meta":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/firststepsontheway.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/59"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/firststepsontheway.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/firststepsontheway.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/firststepsontheway.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/firststepsontheway.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=59"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"http:\/\/firststepsontheway.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/59\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":61,"href":"http:\/\/firststepsontheway.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/59\/revisions\/61"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/firststepsontheway.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=59"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
