God promised to put His Spirit on all of His people, just as Moses had wished.\u00a0 He gave this promise through the prophet Joel:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong><em>&#8220;And afterward, I will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pour out my Spirit on all people<\/span>. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.\u00a0 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.<\/em><\/strong> (Joel 2:28,29)<\/p>\n<p>In 29 or 30 A.D. John the Baptist was telling people that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">One who is more powerful<\/span> than I, Whose sandals I am not fit to carry. \u00a0He <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will baptize you with the Holy Spirit<\/span> and with fire.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(Matthew 3:11)<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several times Jesus Himself foretold that the Holy Spirit would be lavishly poured out on God\u2019s people:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>John 7:37-39 (at the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem)<\/li>\n<li>John 14:15-17; 14:25-26; 16:7-15 (the night before He died for us)<\/li>\n<li>Luke 24:49 (the night that He rose from the dead)<\/li>\n<li>Acts 1:4-5 (during another one of His appearances after His resurrection)<\/li>\n<li>Acts 1:8 (the day that He ascended into heaven)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jesus began to pour out the Spirit on His people on Pentecost (a Jewish festival) on May 24, 30 A.D. in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.\u00a0 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.\u00a0 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit<\/span> and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.<\/em><\/strong> (Acts 2:1-4)<\/p>\n<p>A crowd gathered.\u00a0 Peter explained that this event was the beginning of the fulfillment of Joel\u2019s prophecy.\u00a0 He told them that they had crucified the Anointed One.\u00a0 They asked what they should do.<\/p>\n<p>Peter replied, <strong><em>&#8220;Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit<\/span>.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The promise<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is<\/span> for you and your children and for all who are far off\u2014<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">for all<\/span> whom the Lord our God will call.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0(Acts 2:38,39)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Definition of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Baptism of the Holy Spirit (in the verse above called <strong><em>the Gift of the Holy Spirit<\/em><\/strong>) is the lavish outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon each Christian which enables him or her to powerfully bear witness to Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Our Lord Jesus Himself said, <strong><em>\u201cYou shall receive <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">power<\/span> when the Holy Ghost has come upon you, and you shall be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">witnesses\u00a0 to Me<\/span> in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0(Acts 1:8.\u00a0 See also Luke 24:49; John 7:37,38)<\/p>\n<p><strong>How the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is Received<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Christians receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit in the same way that we receive many other blessings \u2013 through faith in God\u2019s promises in Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Where is this written?\u00a0 Paul writes to the Galatians:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cDid you receive the Spirit by works of law, or by the hearing of faith? . . . He Who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of law or by the hearing of faith? . . . <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">we<\/span> . . . <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">receive the promise of the Spirit through faith<\/span>.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> (Galatians 3:2,5,14)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Effect of the Holy Spirit <\/strong><strong>on a Person\u2019s Life<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Holy Spirit produces <strong>fruit<\/strong> in a Christian\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But the fruit of the Spirit is <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>love, <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>joy, <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>peace, <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>patience, <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>kindness, <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>goodness, <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>faithfulness, <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>gentleness and <\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>self-control. <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Against such things there is no law.<\/em><\/strong> (Galatians 5:22-23)\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Holy Spirit gives <strong>gifts<\/strong> to each Christian:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">different gifts<\/span>, according to the grace given us. If a man&#8217;s gift is &#8211; <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">prophesying<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">serving<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>, let him serve; if it is <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">teaching<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>, let him teach; if it is <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">encouraging<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>, let him encourage; if it is <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">contributing to the needs of others<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>, let him give generously; if it is <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">leadership<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>, let him govern diligently; if it is <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">showing mercy<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>, let him do it cheerfully.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Romans 12:4-8)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Role of the Laying on of Hands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Holy Spirit can be received at the laying on of hands.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. When Simon saw that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the Spirit was given at the laying on of<\/span> the apostles&#8217; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hands<\/span>, . . \u201d<\/em><\/strong> (Acts 8:17-18)<\/p>\n<p>The Gift of the Holy Spirit can also be received without the laying on of hands.\u00a0 Consider the following:<\/p>\n<p>On Pentecost the 120 believers received the Gift of the Holy Spirit without the laying on of hands.<\/p>\n<p>Again, in Acts 10 Cornelius, his family, and his friends received the Gift of the Holy Spirit without the laying on of hands.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, it seems that the laying on of hands to receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit was normal in the first centuries of the Christian church.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Review the promises that God has made concerning the Gift of the Holy Spirit.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Believe these promises with all your heart.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0On the basis of your faith in these promises, pray that God will pour out His Spirit also on you.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0If it seems good to you, ask another Christian to lay hands on you and pray that you would be filled with the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 A good time for this is when you are baptized with water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>WHAT GREAT ADAM HAD AND LOST<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Lyrics by Martin H. &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u266d<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">7<\/span>\u00a0 |\u00a0 1 &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; ||<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">ABOUT THE LYRICS<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The verses are each written in seven lines, each line with seven syllables.\u00a0 Seven is a good biblical number which seems to suggest God (3) in His relationship with mankind (4).\u00a0 3 + 4 = 7.\u00a0 The rhyme scheme is ABABCBC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Notes on Verse 1<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>Martin Luther apparently proposed that our first parents were clothed with light.\u00a0 Ancient Chinese characters also suggest this.\u00a0 After spending 40 days in the presence of God, Moses face beamed.\u00a0 Jesus face shone like the sun on the Mount of Transfiguration.\u00a0 God is light; and it stands to reason that, if mankind was created in His image, man would also reflect this trait (pun intended).\u00a0 No matter what the reality was in regard to this light, after the fall mankind lost its ability to reflect the character and nature of God which originally had been enabled by the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 He lost his ability to communicate with God effectively and to communicate about God effectively with others.\u00a0 These also were enabled by the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 As I understand Pentecost, this was a time when God re-enabled His people to do these things.\u00a0 So, please understand when I write that Adam was \u201cclothed in flame and decked in light\u201d at least as a figurative way of saying that Adam initially filled with the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>In Numbers 11:29 Moses expressed his desire that God would put His Holy Spirit in lavish fashion on all of His people.<\/p>\n<p>In Joel 2:28, 29 this wish of Moses became God\u2019s promise.<\/p>\n<p>John reiterated this promise (Matthew 3:11), as did our Lord most elaborately and emphatically (as, for example, in John 7:37-39 and Acts 1:4,5).<\/p>\n<p>The Spirit began to be poured out in fullness on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4ff.).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Notes on Verse 2<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>John the Baptist announced that Jesus would baptize His people with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:8).\u00a0 At His baptism our Lord was anointed with the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38).\u00a0 Indeed, His title \u201cChrist\u201d is derived from this event.\u00a0 We are called Christians (Acts 11:26), presumably because we are in some way anointed ones also.\u00a0 John reminds us that we have an anointing which teaches us concerning all things (1 John 2:20,27).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Jesus told Nicodemus that he must be born again from above of water <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and the Spirit<\/span> (John 3:3,5).<\/p>\n<p>Upon His ascension into heaven the Father gave to Jesus the authority to pour out the Holy Spirit upon mankind (Acts 2:33).<\/p>\n<p>Peter promised \u201ctimes of refreshing\u201d (Acts 3:19).<\/p>\n<p>The Spirit descended upon our Lord in the form of a dove after His baptism (Mark 1:10).<\/p>\n<p>In summary, the work of the Holy Spirit is to restore the image of God in us and to reverse the curses that came upon us when our first parents disobeyed their Creator.\u00a0 He restores lost knowledge of God and insight into His character.\u00a0 He helps us to root out sin and become more like God in our behavior.\u00a0 He restores supernatural power to do good things before God and for our neighbor.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Notes on Verse 3<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>See Acts 2:38,39.\u00a0 This third verse is simply a poetic version of these verses.\u00a0 This verse is intended to remind God\u2019s people of this promise, for it is God\u2019s promises that produce faith.\u00a0 If God\u2019s people are not presented with this promise, they will not believe it.\u00a0 I believe that Christian teaching must put this promise out in front of God\u2019s people so that they will believe it!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Notes on Verse 4<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>This verse is an expression of gratitude.\u00a0 Those who believe this promise and see it operative in their lives will certainly want to express their gratitude to the gracious God who lovingly and lavishly pours out His Spirit on all flesh!<\/p>\n<p>The fiery tongues remind us of the visible manifestation of the Spirit\u2019s activity on Pentecost (Acts 2:3).<\/p>\n<p>When Saul was converted\u00a0 Ananias laid hands on him.\u00a0 He was filled with the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 Also, he was healed of his blindness.\u00a0 Actually, he was healed both physically and spiritually.\u00a0 Yes, his eyes could see again; but, more importantly, he could \u201csee\u201d that Jesus is the Christ (Acts 9:17-20).\u00a0 The Holy Spirit enables us to \u201csee\u201d such things also.<\/p>\n<p>The fruit of the Spirit is described in Galatians 5:22, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are described in 1 Corinthians 12-14 and Romans 12.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">ABOUT THE TUNE<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The tune \u201cWhat Adam Had and Lost\u201d came to me while working at IBM in Rochester, Minnesota during the second week of November, 2010.\u00a0 The lyrics for the first three verses were written at the same place during the couple of weeks before that.\u00a0 The last verse was written the week after that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only after writing the tune down in numerical notation did I notice that each succeeding line begins with the next higher step on the scale.<\/p>\n<p>The tune is actually in the mixolydian mode; the seventh step of the scale in the second line and fifth line is lowered by one half step.\u00a0 However, please note that the seven scale step in the fourth line is actually raised (in other words, in the key of D this is to be sung as a C #).<\/p>\n<p>I have attempted to put this tune into a numerical notation similar to the notation that can be found in Chinese hymnals.\u00a0 I hope that it can be understood easily enough.\u00a0 I have used the following for various note values:<\/p>\n<p>quarter: 1<\/p>\n<p>eighth:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1<\/span><\/p>\n<p>dotted quarter: 1\u00b7<\/p>\n<p>half:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>dotted half:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1 &#8211; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 1 &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>There is a dot under the note if the note is below the tonic note (in this case, D).\u00a0 There is a dot over the note if the note is an octave or more above the tonic note,\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A dash (-) between two notes indicates that these both of the notes are for the same syllable;
