underline;\">John<\/span> came, baptizing in the desert region<\/em><\/strong> (Mark 1:4).\u00a0 A remarkable man named John began baptizing with water.\u00a0 Who is this man?<\/p>\n<p>Two Old Testament prophecies foretold John\u2019s activities.\u00a0\u00a0 One was\u00a0 Isaiah 40:3 \u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">voice<\/span> of one calling in the desert: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prepare\u00a0the way for the LORD<\/span>;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was John\u2019s voice which was eventually heard in the desert.\u00a0 It was his duty to prepare the sons of Israel for the appearance of the Seed, <strong><em>\u201cthe LORD,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Who was promised to our first parents!<\/p>\n<p>The other Old Testament prophecy of John is Malachi 3:1 &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>[The Son of God, more than 400 years before He became a man (!) said:] <strong><em>\u201cSee, I will send <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">My<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">messenger<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Who will prepare the way before Me<\/span>.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The prophet Malachi also predicted that John would <strong><em>\u201cprepare the way before\u201d <\/em><\/strong>Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Also, John would be the <strong><em>messenger<\/em><\/strong> of the LORD.\u00a0 That is to say, the message that John proclaimed was the LORD\u2019s message, including the message that accompanied the baptizing with water that he was doing.<\/p>\n<p>Once Jesus asked the Jewish religious leaders, <strong><em>\u201c . . . John\u2019s baptism \u2013 was it from heaven, or from men?\u00a0 Tell me!\u201d<\/em><\/strong> (Mark 11:29)\u00a0 From the Old Testament above we clearly see that the right answer is: <strong><em>\u201cFrom heaven\u201d!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">preaching<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a baptism<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">of repentance<\/span> for the forgiveness of sins.<\/em><\/strong> (Mark 1:4a)<\/p>\n<p>The word <strong><em>preaching<\/em><\/strong> has various meanings in English, but the Greek word here refers to the activity of a herald.\u00a0 A herald was a person who went into the king\u2019s realm and announced to the people of the king\u2019s realm the message that the king wanted to be announce to his people.\u00a0 So, John was performing the duty of a herald.\u00a0 God is the King.\u00a0 John was a herald; he was announcing to the people of this world the message that God the King wanted them to know.<\/p>\n<p>John was <strong><em>preaching a baptism<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The Lord, the great King, gave John the words to say about this baptism.<\/p>\n<p>The baptism with water that John announced for the great King was a <strong><em>baptism of repentance<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 This application of water was intimately connected with repentance.\u00a0 Do you remember the teaching on repentance?\u00a0 Repentance is the great turning of a person, with the result that he turns toward God.\u00a0 You will soon see the wonderful benefits that God gives through baptism toward that end. (One benefit is mentioned already in this passage, Mark 1:4!)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0[Paul said about John:]<strong><em> &#8220;John&#8217;s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">told the people to believe<\/span> in the One coming after him, that is, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in Jesus<\/span>.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (Acts 19:4)<\/p>\n<p>[John said:] <strong><em>&#8220;I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">One who is more powerful<\/span> than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry.\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(Matthew 3:11)<\/p>\n<p>Jesus and His disciples continued to baptize with water as John the Baptist did (John 3:22, John 4:2, Matthew 28:19).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Benefits of Baptizing with Water<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Peter replied, &#8220;Repent and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">be baptized<\/span>, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">for the forgiveness of your sins<\/span>. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.<\/em><\/strong> (Acts 2:38)<\/p>\n<p>We saw this benefit in Mark 1:4 already.\u00a0 Baptism with water is <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">for the forgiveness of your sins<\/span><\/em><\/strong>!\u00a0 John told the people to believe in Jesus.\u00a0 Jesus would die for the people of this world and provide the forgiveness of sins for all.\u00a0 Because Jesus did this God can grant this gift to people through baptism with water.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to make her holy<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cleansing<sup> <\/sup>her<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">by the washing with water through the word<\/span>, . . .\u201d<\/em><\/strong> (Ephesians 5:25-26)<\/p>\n<p>This is an important passage to understand baptism with water.\u00a0 Here baptism with water is called <strong><em>the washing with water through the word<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The water is not alone; the word of God is connected to this water.\u00a0 We saw this idea before as we considered that John the Baptist was <strong><em>preaching a baptism<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Notice what the loving Christ accomplishes <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">by the washing with water through the word<\/span><\/em><\/strong> &#8211; He makes His church <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">holy<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cleansing<sup> <\/sup>her!<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>for all of you who were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptized into Christ<\/span> have clothed yourselves with Christ. <\/em><\/strong>(Galatians 3:27)<\/p>\n<p>Christians are <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptized into Christ<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 There is a union, an intimate connection, that occurs between Christ and a person through baptism.\u00a0 This concept is amplified in Colossians 2:12:<\/p>\n<p>[You have]<strong><em> been buried with Him <\/em><\/strong>[Christ] <strong><em>in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The result of having been united with Christ in connection with baptism, then, is that we have died with Christ, have been buried with Him and have been raised to newness of life with Him!\u00a0 In other words, all the benefits of His death, burial, and resurrection become ours!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>For we were all <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptized<\/span> by one Spirit <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">into one body<\/span>\u2014whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free\u2014and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. <\/em><\/strong>(1 Corinthians 12:13)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here the apostle Paul says Christians are <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptized<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em> by one Spirit <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">into one body<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The body to which he refers is the body of Christ.\u00a0 He means the whole body of believers.\u00a0 When a person is baptized he enters this body of people!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">He saved us<\/span>, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">through<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the washing of rebirth<\/span> and renewal by the Holy Spirit, <\/em><\/strong>(Titus 3:4-5)<\/p>\n<p>Here baptism is called <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the washing of rebirth<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Rebirth (being born again) and repentance are similar ideas.\u00a0 Both are connected intimately with baptism with water.\u00a0 Being born again into the family of God our Father is a tremendous benefit connected with baptism with water!<\/p>\n<p>Notice carefully the word <strong><em>through<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 This verse clearly says that God saves us <strong><em>through<\/em><\/strong> the washing of rebirth.\u00a0 <strong><em>\u201cHe saved us <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">through<\/span> the washing of rebirth.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Clearly, baptism with water is a means <strong><em>through<\/em><\/strong> which God accomplishes such a great thing as our salvation!<\/p>\n<p>The Lord taught the same connection between baptism with water and being born again in John 3:3-5 &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jesus answered and said to him, &#8220;Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">born again<\/span> he cannot see the kingdom of God.&#8221; <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nicodemus said to Him, &#8220;How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother&#8217;s womb and be born, can he?&#8221; <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Jesus answered, &#8220;Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">born of water and the Spirit<\/span> he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peter repeats the idea that baptism saves in 1 Peter 3:21 \u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>and this water <\/em><\/strong>[that is, the water of the Great Flood]<strong><em> symbolizes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">baptism<\/span> that now <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">saves<\/span> you also\u2014not the removal of dirt from the body but the promise of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary of the Benefit <\/strong><strong>of Baptism with Water<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Repentance<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>The Forgiveness of Sins<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Being Made Holy, Being Cleansed<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>4.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Union with Christ<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>5.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Death, Burial, and Resurrection with Christ to Newness of Life<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>6.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Union with the Body of Christ<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>7.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Rebirth (being born again)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>8.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>A Way by Which God Saves Us<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In baptism what is the main thing?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Are YOU doing something for GOD?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">or<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Is GOD doing something for YOU?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about Baptizing Babies?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1) <strong><em>\u201call nations\u201d<\/em><\/strong> include babies.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cTherefore go and make disciples of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all nations<\/span>, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(Matthew 28:19)<\/p>\n<p>2) Jesus wants babies in His kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But Jesus called the children <\/em><\/strong>(The Greek word is \u2018brephe,\u201d referring to nursing babies and even unborn babies.)<strong><em> to Him and said, &#8220;Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the kingdom of God belongs to such as these<\/span>. <\/em><\/strong>(Luke 18:16)<\/p>\n<p>3) Babies need baptism.\u00a0 We are all <strong><em>\u201csinful\u201d<\/em><\/strong> from the time of conception.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. <\/em><\/strong>(Psalm 51:5)<strong><em>\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4) Babies can believe \u2013 <strong><em>\u201cthese little ones who believe in Me\u201d<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But if anyone causes one of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">these little ones<\/span> <\/em><\/strong>(literally, micro-people)<strong><em> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">who believe in Me<\/span> to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. <\/em><\/strong>(Matthew 18:6)<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Baptize<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The word \u2018baptize\u2019 means to apply water.\u00a0 This can be done in a variety of ways.\u00a0 Please consider HOW the various things were \u2018baptized\u2019 in the following passages:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Mark 7:4\u00a0 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">washing<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><em>(<\/em>literally,<em> <strong>baptizing<\/strong>)<strong> of cups, <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 pitchers and <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 kettles (and <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 dining couches).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus did not first <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wash<\/span> (<\/em><\/strong>literally,<strong><em> baptize) before the meal, was surprised.<\/em><\/strong> (Luke 11:38)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Sprinkling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Moses purified or cleansed the tabernacle and everything used in it<\/em><\/strong> (<strong><em>and the people<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 see Exodus 24:8) <strong><em>by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sprinkling<\/span> them with the blood of a sacrifice mixed with water.<\/em><\/strong> (Hebrews 9:21)<\/p>\n<p>In this way these things were cleansed and set apart of God\u2019s purposes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Washing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Moses made a bronze basin for water so that the priests could \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wash<\/span>\u201d their hands and feet from it, \u201cso that they will not die.\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(Exodus 30:19,20)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wash<\/span> away your sins\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(Acts 22:16)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201ccleansing her by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">washing<\/span> of water through the word\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(Ephesians 5:26)<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Immersion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">buried<\/span> with Him through baptism\u201d<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0(Romans 6:4)<\/p>\n<p>This method beautifully shows how the \u201cold man\u201d in us is drowned and dies and how the \u201cnew man\u201d comes out of baptism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Should You Do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Review the wonderful promises that God\u00a0attaches to this application of water.<\/li>\n<li>If you have not been baptized,\u00a0 arrange to\u00a0be baptized.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Continue to believe the promises.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Daily live in the forgiveness, status, and\u00a0power that you have received.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Long Shall I wait?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consider the example of the early church:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that day<\/span>.<\/em><\/strong> (Acts 2:41)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, &#8220;Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (Acts 8:36)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>And he took them [the jailor at Philippi and his family] <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that very hour<\/span> of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household. <\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Acts 16:33)<\/p>\n<p>Also consider:\u00a0 Acts 9:18, Acts 10:47, Acts 16:15<\/p>\n<p><strong>With Water, Word<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(a baptism hymn)<\/p>\n<p>1. With water, Word You turned my will<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 From self to You; baptized I see<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The turning point in life for me \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The font, the source for turning still.\u00a0 (Mark 1:4)<\/p>\n<p>2. A bath of water with the Word<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Which both reveals what You have done<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And Who You are, O Triune One,<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Connects me to this Name I\u2019ve heard. (Ephesians 5:26)<\/p>\n<p>3. With water pure You have bathed me,<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My heartfelt grief You sprinkled clean!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My conscience now by Blood serene,<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To You I come with certainty.\u00a0 (Hebrews 10:22)<\/p>\n<p>4.
